We will talk about stress management and a very powerful tool to overcome it; Hearth - Brain Coherence. First, let me share some of what I used to experience. As many of you know, I worked in various roles in the technology sector as a professional for many years. There were countless sleepless nights caused by stress, frequent cold sores (at least 4-5 times a year), stomach aches before important meetings, and bursts of irritation for no apparent reason. Tension and anxiety were constant companions. You get so used to these experiences that they start to feel normal. But in reality, it’s your body trying to signal that something is wrong, that things aren’t okay. It’s crucial to take a step back from the daily grind and pay attention to these signs.
When we stay attached to those negative emotions, our immune system is significantly impacted. Scientists have proven that just 3-5 minutes of a negative emotional state can have a harmful effect on your immune system lasting at least 6-8 hours. This is why the emotions you dwell in, and how much time you spend in them, have a profound impact on both your physical and mental health. Be careful…
The Hidden Source of Stress: Your Mind and Conditioning
Have you ever noticed how much your stress stems not just from external situations but from your own thoughts? According to Human Design, the mind, while a powerful tool, often becomes the primary source of stress when it takes over and starts driving our decisions. Instead of simply observing and analyzing, the mind can amplify feelings of anxiety through thoughts like "I should have done this" or "I must meet these expectations." This conditioning often stems from societal pressures, upbringing, or unresolved patterns in your design.
Human Design teaches us to use the mind as a tool rather than letting it dictate our emotions and actions. Much of our stress arises from operating out of alignment with our unique blueprint—trying to meet external expectations rather than following our true path.
Your Second Brain: Your Hearth
Or should I say third? You decide, gut or hearth? But let’s remember that we have more than 40 thousand sensor neurons in the back of our hearth! That gives us a direct connection from our hearths to our brains.
When we think about this connection, our first thought is usually that our mind controls our heart, isn’t it? However, the truth is the exact opposite. It has been discovered that in the heart-brain connection, 95% of the data flow moves from the heart to the mind. Our heart transmits data gathered from our body through these sensory neurons to our mind. In fact, our heart plays a crucial role in the formation of all mental processes.
The heart-brain connection refers to the dynamic relationship between our emotional state, heart rhythms, and cognitive abilities. This connection plays a significant role in how we think, feel, and act. Let me break down the concepts of incoherence and coherence in this context:
Incoherence in the Heart-Brain Connection
When we experience negative emotions such as stress, anger, or sadness, our heart rhythms become erratic and disorganized. This state is often referred to as incoherence.
Incoherence disrupts the flow of information between the heart and the brain. The heart sends signals to the brain that reinforce stress, making it harder to think clearly, make decisions, or respond appropriately to situations.
Physiologically, incoherence activates the body’s stress response, flooding the system with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This amplifies the "fight or flight" mode, which is essential for survival but detrimental in daily decision-making or interpersonal interactions.
Coherence in the Heart-Brain Connection
Coherence occurs when the heart rhythms are smooth, regular, and harmonious, often experienced during positive emotional states like gratitude, love, or safety.
In this state, the heart sends signals to the brain that support optimal functioning. Coherence helps balance the autonomic nervous system (responsible for regulating bodily functions like heart rate and breathing).
A coherent state enhances cognitive clarity, emotional regulation, and decision-making. It aligns the body and mind, enabling us to respond to challenges with resilience and creativity.
Why Does This Matter?
As I have mentioned before the heart sends more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. This means the quality of signals from the heart significantly influences mental processes, including focus, memory, and problem-solving.
By fostering coherence (through practices like mindfulness, breathing exercises, or emotional regulation or with Hearth-Brain Coherence meditation which I will talk about), you can improve our ability to manage stress, navigate relationships, and perform better under pressure.
You Reach Your Top Performance with Coherence
When you reach a Hearth-Brain coherence state;
You obtain a stress decreases (due to a drop in cortisol levels)
Your immune system strengthens
Anti-aging hormones (DHEA) are released
Nervous and digestive systems reach peak performance
Sleep quality improves
Energy levels increase
Focus and concentration improve
Problem-solving skills develop
Increased resilience – it becomes easier to overcome challenging situations and return to a high-frequency state of love, gratitude, and forgiveness
Your intuition will improve, and you’ll be able to make smarter decisions
Coherence in 4 Steps - Time To Apply
You can do this meditation even just before an important meeting, try to stay alone just for 5 minutes. Close your eyes and focus internally.
Focus on Your Heart: Gently close your eyes and direct all your attention to your heart area.
Slow Down Your Breathing: Take deep and slow breaths to regulate your rhythm. Stay couple of breaths here, just focus on your inhale and exhale.
Feel a Positive Emotion: Feel a strong and positive emotion in your heart, such as compassion, love, or appreciation. Try to imagine this feeling at your hearth. How do you sense your hearth with that feeling? Imagine that your hearth is getting bigger and bigger with this positive feeling. Feel the energy that radiates from your hearth to your body.
Sense the Flow from Your Heart to Your Mind: Focus on the flow of energy created by this positive emotion. Stay as long as you have time. Just notice how your body feels in this stage.
Voila… You have done your first Hearth-Brain Coherence meditation. Don’t forget that you need to work on it to make it better for the next time. Better? Is there a method for measuring the coherence? Yes, Hearth Math Institute has developed a method and a sensor device to measure your coherence levels. If you are interested you might follow the link. Hearthmath Institute
Well, as you have noticed, and hopefully experienced, Hearth-Brain Coherence is a very powerful tool for stress reduction and obtaining a high performance. That’s why we call this series “Tools for Leaders” as we will continue to give you more tools to Align & Thrive with your Life & Work.
Hope you like it, waiting your comments and feedback.
Dinçer
It goes way further than that. Have you ever heard about the "The DNA Field and the Law of Resonance"? DNA extacted from a human body, placed 350 miles away and the DNA responded in the same fraction of a second to the person having certain emotions? And in case someone does not believe it, it was the US Army that did the studies. There is so much happening in the body and all is at the end energy. There is as well "stomach" intelligence. And if you think of it, here are some scientific facts and a simple question:
- Human Brain: 86 bio. neurons, 85 bio. non-neurons, Total ~ 171 bio. brain cells
- Human Body: 30 trillion human cells, 38 trillion bacteria cells, Total ~ 68 trillion cells
- So the brain makes up: = 0.57 % of all human body cells, or = 0.25 % of all body cells
- Consciousness: Speed neural impulses 120-140 mph 2,000 bits / second, Information processing: 40 bits/second
- Un-Consciousness: Speed neural impulses 96.000-112.000 mph, 400 mio. bits / second; Information processing: 11 mio. bits/second
Question: Why do we trust our consciousness and brain so much?
